Pregnant women have strong motivation to stop using drugs. Consuming alcohol or using drugs during pregnancy can cause harm to the mother and the fetus. These substances cross the placenta. Even if you do it cold turkey, detoxing can put stress on your fetus. This could lead to preterm labor, severe fetal distress, and even death.
Sometimes intensive treatment is required at the beginning. Patients are required to attend several outpatient sessions each week. After intensive treatment is completed, patients are able to transition to outpatient treatment. Patients will see a therapist less often and have fewer hours per week in order to maintain their recovery. In September 2017, FDA allowed the marketing of the first mobile application, called reSET(r) to help with substance use disorders. This application can be used as an outpatient treatment to treat substance use disorders like marijuana, cocaine, and even marijuana. The FDA approved a mobile medical app, reSET(r) in December 2018 to treat opioid addiction disorders. This application is a prescription cognitive therapy. It should be used along with treatment that includes buprenorphine as well as contingency and management. You can read more about reSETr in this FDA News Release.

In drug rehabilitation, the definition of "recovery" is still subjective. There are no established standards for measuring it. According to the Betty Ford Institute, recovery is defined as complete abstinence and personal well-being. Other studies consider "near abstinence” a definition. This wide variety of meanings makes it difficult to select rehabilitation programs.
Each person's detox needs will be different. To help addicts recover from their addiction, the drug detox process allows them to receive personalized treatment. In most cases, there are three steps involved.

Maintenance refers to the continuation of the counseling and support as specified in the treatment plan. It also includes refinement and strengthening strategies to avoid relapse and participation in ongoing relapse prevention and aftercare (Lehman et. al. 2000).
Drug addiction starts with the willingness to take drugs. However, over time, the person's decision to not take drugs becomes more difficult. Compulsive drug seeking and use can become a habitual behavior. This is due to long-term drug exposure's effects on brain function. Addiction causes brain damage in areas involved with reward and motivation and learning and memory. It also affects control over behavior.

One of the biggest problems with rehab programs is the lack of a sustainable plan for continued recovery support after discharge. Although there may be weekly aftercare for drug addiction, many people must travel quite a distance to attend them, and attendance drops over time.
Researchers have many models. There are four main Behavioral Models to addiction. These models include the Moral Model. Sociocultural Model. Socio-Cultural Model. Psycho-dynamic Model. The Moral Model of Addiction holds that addiction is a result of moral weakness. The Moral Model supports drug abuse as an option for all people, including those who are addicted. Addicts are considered to be bad characters. According to the Disease Model, substance abuse can be described as a chronic, relapsing condition that causes brain damage. Research into the neurobiological reasons for addiction has shown mixed results. Abstinence is the only option. Sociocultural Model attempts to explain how certain populations are more likely to abuse substances than others. It discusses the ways in which discrimination, poverty, lack of opportunity, or other problems that can be found in marginalized communities can lead to them becoming more vulnerable to addiction. Psycho-Dynamic models consider trauma and mental illness to be a precursor of addiction. Many rehabilitation centers deal with "co-occurring", or substance abuse disorder and mental illness.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV–TR), a substance-related condition is a "disorder that results from the use of a drug of addiction (including alcohol), to side effects of a medication and to exposure to toxic substances" (APA 2000). The term substance could refer to a drug of addiction, a medication or a toxin (APA2000, p.191). This TIP defines substance as alcohol and any other drug of abuse.
China's history has been filled with compulsory drug rehabilitation. The Mao Zedong regime is credited for eliminating both consumption and production of heroin during the 1950s. This was done through unrestrained repression as well as social reform. Ten million addicts were forced to receive compulsory treatment. The dealers were executed. New crops were also planted in the opium-producing zones. The remaining opium production was moved south from the Chinese border to the Golden Triangle region.
A long-term program for drug rehabilitation may be suitable for those who have a dual diagnosis. People may opt for a long-term program because they feel more secure with the extra insurance that a longer program provides.
This TIP covers other important issues such as detoxification being an integral part of the continuum for healthcare services to treat substance-related disorders. The TIP reinforces the urgent need for nontraditional settings--such as emergency rooms, medical and surgical wards in hospitals, acute care clinics, and others that do not traditionally provide detoxification services--to be prepared to participate in the process of getting the patient who is in need of detoxification into a program as quickly as possible to potentially avoid the myriad possible negative consequences associated with substance abuse (e.g., physiological and psychological disturbances/disorders, criminal involvement, unemployment, etc.). It promotes the use of modern strategies to retain individuals in detoxification and encourages the formation of a therapeutic alliance that promotes the patient's entry into substance abuse treatment. This also includes suggestions for how to deal with psychosocial issues which may impact detoxification services.
Sometimes, detox includes medication that mimics withdrawal symptoms. Other conditions and general discomfort may also be addressed by medications.
A medical detox program for high-volume alcohol consumption is crucial. Before a person begins receiving treatment, detoxification is the first step.
The cost of inpatient residential treatment for someone with an alcohol problem is prohibitive without insurance. American programs usually last for 28-30 days. It is solely based on the experience of providers. In the 1940s the average client stayed around one week to adjust to the changes in their bodies, another week for understanding the program, and another week to become stable. American residential alcohol rehabilitation programs offer 12-step support services to 70% to 80%. These include AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), Cocaine Anonymous, and Al-Anon. A recent study found that family involvement is important in residential treatment patient retention. It showed an increase in program completion rates for patients who had a family member or significant else participate in a seven-day family program.

Detoxing at home can prove dangerous and even deadly. If you decide to stop "cold turkey" and do not have medical supervision, it can cause serious complications such as seizures and severe hypoglycemia.
The length of drug detox depends on the substance being used, how much of it was used, and how long the individual has been using the substance. It could also depend upon the person's mental and physical health at the time they begin detox. The detox process can be easier for people who are motivated than those who are reluctant.
